The new top model of the company offers real luxury in terms of workmanship and some new features.
With an already rotating crown, voice assistant, and mobile connectivity: In early June, Huawei introduced the next generation of its smartwatches. The Watch 3 and Watch 3 Pro follow the company’s already established tradition of high quality and build on it, offering a brilliant AMOLED display, high-quality processing, and fitness capabilities, as well as sleep analysis and fall detection. And we have already managed to test the top model in a few days.
The Watch 3 and Watch 3 Pro differ mainly in size: the Pro is 48 millimeters in size and 14 millimeters thick. The display of both models has a diagonal of 1.43 inches. In the Pro, it is surrounded by a frame, which is missing in the smaller model. The smaller Watch 3 is 46 millimeters in size and is -12 millimeters thinner. The resolution of the displays remains the same, it is 466 x 466 pixels for both.
The second difference is the material. The body of the Watch 3 is made of stainless steel, Watch 3 Pro is made of titanium and uses sapphire crystal. Both gadgets have a ceramic base that contains heart rate sensors. The charging washer is attached here, which will charge the device inductively.
Huawei Watch 3 can be used not only with Huawei phones but also with iPhone or Android phones from another manufacturer. The only requirement: it must work at least with Android 6.0 or iOS 9.0. The Huawei Health application is also required for adjustment – both watches need the Huawei Health application for commissioning. It is not only used for configuration but also combines all recorded health and sleep data. The application can make calls with the watch independently of the smartphone, using E-Sim. This can also be done without E-Sim, as long as the Bluetooth mobile phone is nearby. The acoustics are really good.
Once activated and placed on the wrist, the Huawei Watch 3 Pro is really exciting and simply impresses with its high quality.
The straps are interchangeable and there are variants with different materials. By the way, the strap can be changed in just a few simple steps. All you have to do is push a small switch and pull it out. Although our test model is brand new, the leather strap is not stiff but gently wraps around the wrist.
There, Huawei’s watch quickly attracts attention, even if only because of its size. The AMOLED display of the smartwatch is a majestic 1.43 inches diagonally and, of course, is touch-sensitive. In addition to the touch screen, as mentioned at the beginning, there is also a crown for menu navigation. It can also be pressed, for example, to confirm the entered data. The device also has a second button that gives you quick access to a predefined application.
The information is displayed in a relatively large size on the clock screen, so that it is easy to read, even when exposed to sunlight. Even entering a long Wi-Fi password on the watch’s on-screen keyboard is easy without having to make a lot of typing mistakes.
Huawei Watch 3 (Pro) can act as an addition to the smartphone. If you give the watch the appropriate permissions, it will show you incoming notifications and calls. This also applies to WhatsApp messages.
You can now answer clock calls when the smartphone is paired. In order to be able to reply to incoming messages, you need to install an additional application on your phone and watch – Mood Messenger or Handset Next SMS.
Other features that are available in connection with a mobile phone are music playback control and a camera. However, the latter is not yet possible for iOS phones. You can skip a song forward or backward, pause playback, and adjust the volume.
But even without a connection to a mobile phone, the Huawei Watch 3 can perform many functions. It not only records your steps but also measures your heart rate 24/7, if you wish, monitors your sleep, measures the oxygen content in your blood (SpO2), as well as your current stress level and even your skin temperature. This is possible thanks to multiple sensors and an integrated GPS module. Medical functions, such as the ECG, on the other hand, are not available.
Nevertheless, Huawei Watch 3 provides information about your health, and through the recorded data – tips on how to live healthier. It is also a loyal companion in sports. Whether it’s hiking, running, or cycling, the Huawei Watch 3 can record multiple activities and store the right performance data, very accurately.
What about the battery life of the Huawei Watch 3 Pro? As mentioned at the beginning, Huawei states that the Pro version associated with the phone can last up to 5 days on a single battery charge, but when using eSIM. By the way, this drains the battery quite a lot, because the gadget is constantly trying to connect to the cells of the operator.
The typical scenario of the so-called Smart mode is endurance for up to 5 days in the following situations: factory setting, 2 hours LTE connection every day, 22 hours Bluetooth connection to a mobile phone every day, activated heart rate monitoring, activated mode for sleep monitoring at night, 60 minutes of using apps every week, 30 minutes of Bluetooth calls every week, 30 minutes of Bluetooth music every week, 90 minutes of training every week (with GPS activated), activated message notifications, 50 SMS messages, 6 calls and 3 alarms per day) and 200 times the screen is turned on per day.
But when activating the ultra-long battery life, the manufacturer promises up to 21 days of durability. This happens when the factory default setting is activated, heart rate monitoring is activated, sleep monitoring at night, 30 minutes of Bluetooth calls every week, 90 minutes of training every week (GPS activated), activated message notifications (50 SMS messages, 6 calls and 3 alarms per day) and turn on the screen for up to 200 times a day.
Of course, the values strongly depend on the use, as well as on the paired mobile phone. For example, for the iPhone, the period specified by Huawei has been reduced to 2.5 days. According to our test impressions, we consider this information to be realistic for most users. The watch can be charged using the supplied wireless charging cradle.
In my endurance test, I was really positively surprised by the Huawei Watch 3 Pro. All health monitoring sensors were permanently activated, except for the sleep function. With continuous heart rate measurement, automatic stress test, measurement of blood oxygen and skin temperature, the watch works for three to four days. WhatsApp and Co notifications were also active, but are essentially useless because you can’t reply anyway. Only if you exercise a lot, use the high brightness of the display and the GPS function, the usage time decreases faster. But even at this point, it outperforms Samsung’s Galaxy Watch Active 2, for example. I’m not surprised, because the Pro version has a huge 790 mAh battery. It’s a really big battery like a smartwatch. This explains the thickness. But – it’s definitely worth it.
From the point of view of the user experience, mobile functionality represents a big change. If you do not need it, as the smartphone is usually with you, you would like to save a few levs. The other two innovations, Huawei Celia voice assistant function management, and the app gallery are positive news if you use the smartwatch intensively. The store does not have many offers at the moment, this will certainly change in the foreseeable future.
