Review of OnePlus 9 Pro

OnePlus is still a relatively unpopular brand and is better known mainly among people interested in smartphones, but this model in my hand has the potential to change that.

It’s time for the detailed review of the OnePlus 9 Pro, which is not only the best smartphone of the company so far but also the first with such a capable camera, supported by Hasselblad.

Before we get to the camera, however, I want to start with the design, which for me is one of the advantages of the model. The phone is available in three finishes – Pine Green, Stellar Black, and Morning Mist. My unit from OnePlus 9 Pro is silver, and its back is especially interesting because it goes from gray to mirror. I would not say that the design introduces any unprecedented innovations, but in general, I think that a very stylish and clean vision has been achieved, and even the tile with the quadruple-camera on the back does not protrude too much from the body.

The body is actually built on the basis of an aluminum frame and glass with Gorilla Glass 5 protection, which covers both the back and the display. Gorilla Glass 5 is two generations behind the latest Gorilla Glass Victus, so this is something that makes the model inferior to its competitors in the premium segment. Another important feature here is the high protection against dust and water with IP68 certification, which until recently OnePlus refused to add to its smartphones. The case offers a nice layer of protection and is smooth to the touch.

And, of course, the characteristic switch on the side of the case is not missed, which easily switches between ring mode, vibration, and no sound.

In terms of display, the OnePlus 9 Pro does not compromise and offers an excellent 6.7 “screen with slight curves, Quad HD + resolution of 3216×1440 pixels for a dot density of 525 PPI, 10-bit color depth, and up to 1300 nits of brightness. OnePlus uses an AMOLED panel with LTPO technology for a dynamic refresh rate of up to 120 Hz, which means you’ll get the most out of high refresh only when it’s needed, which actually helps save battery power. The screen has excellent viewing angles and reproduces vibrant colors while maintaining excellent dynamic range and sharpness throughout playback.

Overall, a high-quality display that is a pleasing sight to the eye, even in direct sunlight, and also includes the latest technology that will keep it adequate for years to come.

The display has integrated fingerprint scanner, which is located at the very bottom. It is easy to hit and the good news is that it reacts quite agile, which is rare in this type of decision. Of course, there is also an option to unlock the phone by scanning your face, which works even faster, I would even say almost the moment you turn on the display.

This brings me to the camera, which is probably the most important topic in the OnePlus 9 Pro. For the first time with this model, the Chinese manufacturer has partnered with Hasselblad, who have contributed here and there with their technology to make the phone a better photo tool.

OnePlus 9 Pro has mastered some features of Swedish Hasselblad cameras, which includes a special calibration of the sensor to achieve more natural colors. This is actually the most valuable part of the partnership between the two companies. From the weeks I spent with OnePlus 9 Pro, I would say that the shots with it are really with a great color palette, very close to the natural one, especially when shooting faces. In addition, the overall camera performs well with photos in different lighting conditions, and its ultra-wide camera is one of the best so far. By the way, it can also be used as a macro camera.

If photography of landscapes, buildings or even with an ultra-wide lens is something that is important to you – OnePlus 9 Pro is certainly one of the best smartphones with which you can take them. The quality of these photos is almost indistinguishable from that of the main camera, which I have not encountered with any other model so far. Of course, the reason is that the company paid special attention to this camera and used the huge 50 MP sensor Sony IMX766, whose physical dimensions are about 3 times larger than those of the ultra-wide camera in my iPhone 12 Pro Max, for example.

In terms of video, the OnePlus 9 Pro also takes a major step forward, not only offering the standard 4K resolution mode at 60 fps, but also at 120 fps. Electronic and optical stabilization is available, and there is an option for 8K recording at 30 fps.

There is no exciting news with the optical zoom and the camera provides 3.3x zoom without loss in quality and up to 30x digital zoom. In general, this is more than enough, but if you often prefer or need to zoom in on the frame – there are already smartphones with 10x optical zoom on the market.

The battery capacity in the OnePlus 9 Pro is not a record with its 4500 mAh. The smartphone supports super-fast 65 W charging, and the charger for this purpose is included. With its help, you can charge the battery from 1 to 100% for nothing and no 29 minutes.

Interestingly, the 65-watt charge of the OnePlus 9 Pro is the same as that of the OnePlus 8T from last year, but here the charging of the same battery capacity takes ten minutes less time. The reason is that OnePlus has done some software optimizations.

The device also supports 50 W wireless charging. Well, to achieve this, you need to have a suitable pad for this purpose, as that of OnePlus costs around 70 euros.

The sound

OnePlus 9 Pro has stereo speakers, one at the bottom and the other in the handset. The sound from them is rich and strong and will certainly make gaming, watching videos and listening to music without headphones a much more enjoyable activity.

There is no headphone jack.

In the configuration, we have a premium chipset Snapdragon 888, which is supplemented by 8 or 12 GB LPDDR5 RAM with respectively 128 or 256 GB fast UFS 3.1 memory, but there is no slot for microSD cards.

Of course, the feeling of fast and smooth reactions is underpinned not only by the solid configuration, but also by the previously mentioned high refresh rate of the display, as well as by the 360-hertz refresh of the touch panel, which also leads to smoother operation.

In general a great phone with an impressive display, super super fast charging and a good battery, as well as valuable extras such as a fast fingerprint scanner, stereo sound and high protection from dust and water.
